UHCL Is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)

University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) has proudly helped students achieve their career goals since 1974. The university has reached many milestones since then, including being recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), a federal designation defined by the Higher Education Act. A university achieves this designation when it has an enrollment of undergraduate, full-time equivalent students that is at least 25% Hispanic.

UH-Clear Lake became an HSI in 2010. In 2022, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) reported approximately 572 universities in the United States to be HSIs, and UHCL is proud to be one of them. More than 44% of the student population identify as Hispanic, as of spring 2024.

HSI Opportunities and Benefits

The HSI designation opens doors to federal funding aimed at enhancing educational services aimed at Hispanic Americans and other underrepresented populations. HSIs that meet all eligibility requirements (see next section for details) can take advantage of this benefit in the form of federal Title V funds by filling out an application.*

*The Title V Grant helps institutions enhance their academic programs, program quality, and stability to improve the overall education of Hispanic students in the U.S.

If funding is granted, faculty and staff can use the aid for:

• Community collaborations with Hispanic organizations.
• Campus and program improvements.
• Technological enhancements.
• Increased support for Hispanic and other underrepresented students.
