2021-2022 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award

Congratulations to Dr. Youssef Hamidi for being the university's nominee for the 2021-2022 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award, a state level award for superior teaching at the college level. Also, congratulations to Drs. Ariful Bhuiyan, Barbara Hales, Khondker Hasan, Georgina Moreno who were semi-finalists for this award.

Friday Morning Continuing Education

Everett V. Fox Student Competition

Congratulations to Drs. Femi Ayadi, Raymond Khoury and Jordan Mitchell for the success of their Master of Healthcare Administration students at the Everett V. Fox Student competition in which UHCL bested 36 other universities.


Writing Focused Faculty

The following faculty completed their Writing Focused Faculty program under the direction of Center for Faculty Development Fellow, Dr. Lorie Jacobs.  These faculty highlighted their work in a presentation on Writing Across the Disciplines: Faculty Resources and Practices. Faculty included Drs. Leslie Gauna, Anne Gessler, Angela Kelling, Anna Klyueva, Omah Williams-Duncan and Joyce Taylor.

Engaging Students in Core Required Classes

Drs. Anne Gessler, Angela Kelling, Trish Trubl and Omah Williams-Duncan led a cross-disciplinary discussion on Engaging Students in Core and Required Classes for the university community.


Friday Morning Continuing Education Program

Thank you to Dr. Anne Gessler, Clinical Assistant Professor for the First-Year Seminar and Humanities programs, for presenting "Disembodied Women: A History of Women in 1950's Radio to the Friday Morning Continuing Education program.


BADIE Resource Repository

Dr. Sarah Lechago is the faculty advisor of the Behavior Analysts for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (BADIE) research lab. One of the lab's projects is to develop a repository of resources related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. They have created a living repository with the entire UHCL community to both gain access to and make contributions to the repository at BADIE Resource Repository. Great work!


Center for Faculty Development Grants

We are happy to announce three summer grants from the Center for Faculty Development. Dr. Gene Shan received a grant to attend the 2020 Association for Educational Communications and Technology (ACET) Virtual Convention. Dr. Neal Dugre received a grant to enroll in webinars that address strategies and technical support for conducting educational games in online environments. Drs. Ivelina Pavlova-Stout, Jordan Mitchel, and Michael Yu-Chi Wu received funds to support their initiative which will be able to be used across the College of Business and the university.


Actors From The London Stage perform new take on Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'

Thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Klett for helping organize the visit from Actors from the London Stage this February. These professional Shakespearean actors not only performed The Tempest at the UHCL Theater but also visited several classes helping students with public speaking and self-presentation skills.

Anna Klyueva began her academic career in studying economics in her native Tajikistan. While in her freshman year there, she was invited to audition for a position on a popular local television show.


Art teachers get studio time and professional development at workshop

David Moya, former director of University of Houston-Clear Lake's Art School for Children, said that art educators and administrators in the area frequently can't find professional development classes specifically targeting art. That's why UH-Clear Lake's Art School for Children offered a professional workshop for early childhood-12th grade art educators.


UHCL coding academy empowers girls in STEM, fulfills Texas workforce goal

For 25 Houston-area middle school girls thinking about a career in a STEM-related field, the Soaring Hawks Girls Code Academy at University of Houston-Clear Lake was an eye-opening week of designing, creating and digitally innovating.

Shreerekha Subramanian grew up in India with parents who put everything into giving her a good education. Still, she describes a "bibliographic deficit" which has informed the rest of her life as a professor of humanities at University of Houston-Clear Lake.
