Parent/Guardian Resources

Welcome Hawk Family!

Throughout the academic year, we will add resources here that may be useful for members of our Hawk Family. If there is a resource that you do not see on this page, but think may be useful, then please send an email to us at housing@uhcl.edu

What to Expect

Accountability

Student Housing and Residential Life considers all Hunter Hall residents to be adults, with the exception of minors. Our staff assists with holding all residents accountable for their words, behaviors, and actions. This may sometimes include documenting students for their behavior, where students may go through the student conduct process. This is to help ensure that we (students and staff) are role modeling respect and responsibility, as well as fostering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community throughout Hunter Hall. Our caring staff will treat your student with dignity and respect, in all settings.

Communication

There may be times when your student does not wish to communicate with you or others. This is somewhat natural as a student transitions from high school to college. It is important to show concern, without making assumptions. Some weeks are longer and more challenging in college than others. There may be times when a student is working long hours at their campus job or studying for an important paper or exam. We recommend setting up some expectations surrounding communication between you and your student early on. Balance staying flexible with showing you care. Together, all of us are here to help guide, challenge, and support your student.

Engagement

UHCL faculty and staff work hard to help students feel engaged and connected to campus life. From offering high-impact programs to providing hands-on student support, our team promotes relationship-building, academic excellence, and student engagement. It is our vision to provide students with a "home away from home" experience where they are able to Live, Learn, and Engage.

Safety

Our team's main priority is the safety of your student. We have policies and procedures in place to help ensure the safety of all Hunter Hall residents and guests. Students should participate in this by reporting any incidents or suspicious behavior to our staff. In addition, Hunter Hall is equipped with electronic swipe access (to the hall and rooms), cameras, a fire sprinkler system, and a front desk. This, combined with our amazing team of student and professional staff, makes for a thriving environment that is both safe and secure.

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. (An "eligible student" under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older and attends a postsecondary institution.)

As part of FERPA requirements, should a parent, guardian, family member, or anyone call or come to Hunter Hall in-person looking for their student, our staff is unable to confirm or deny that the student lives in the facility. This information is protected for the safety of the student. We understand that this can be a bit frustrating for individuals, and as such, we encourage family members to reach out directly to their student regarding communication expectations. Our staff is also able to perform health and safety checks for students as needed, though we are unable to confirm students living here, their room numbers, etc.

Should you ever have a question or concern regarding a student conduct incident your student may be involved in, we encourage you to reach out directly to the Dean of Students Office for additional information and resources.
