Engaged Learning to Promote STEM Graduation (ELPSG)

Engaged Learning to Promote STEM Graduation (ELPSG) project is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Program Grant funded by the National Science Foundation.

Program Goals

  • Use targeted outreach efforts, pre-college programming, and scholarships to attract new students to STEM majors.

  • Use social and academic support services to increase the retention of students enrolled in STEM majors.

  • Use academic support services and data to increase the number of graduates in STEM majors.

Current Project Activities

  • Community College Advisory Panel – We regularly meet with faculty from San Jacinto College and College of the Mainland to discuss and implement best practices to better support transfer students.

  • Boot Camps and Placement Test Workshops– We implement review workshops for gateway math and science courses and the Advance Math Placement Test.

  • Collaborative Learning – We hire course-embedded tutors in gateway undergraduate Math and Science courses.

  • Student Organizations – We have funds for undergraduate student leaders that wish to attend STEM focused conferences and professional meetings. We also financially support events put on by STEM student organizations.

  • Research – We provide stipends to students and funds for research supplies for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in STEM looking to have the experience of completing a research project with a faculty mentor.

  • Industry Training - We provide stipends for undergraduate students who wish to get hands on experience in local STEM-focused industries.
