Engaged Learning to Promote STEM Graduation (ELPSG)
Engaged Learning to Promote STEM Graduation (ELPSG) project is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Program Grant funded by the National Science Foundation.
Program Goals
- Use targeted outreach efforts, pre-college programming, and scholarships to attract
new students to STEM majors.
- Use social and academic support services to increase the retention of students enrolled
in STEM majors.
- Use academic support services and data to increase the number of graduates in STEM majors.
Current Project Activities
- Community College Advisory Panel – We regularly meet with faculty from San Jacinto College and College of the Mainland
to discuss and implement best practices to better support transfer students.
- Boot Camps and Placement Test Workshops– We implement review workshops for gateway math and science courses and the Advance
Math Placement Test.
- Collaborative Learning – We hire course-embedded tutors in gateway undergraduate Math and Science courses.
- Student Organizations – We have funds for undergraduate student leaders that wish to attend STEM focused
conferences and professional meetings. We also financially support events put on by
STEM student organizations.
- Research – We provide stipends to students and funds for research supplies for students pursuing
an undergraduate degree in STEM looking to have the experience of completing a research
project with a faculty mentor.
- Industry Training - We provide stipends for undergraduate students who wish to get hands on experience in local STEM-focused industries.
