Tutoring & Embedded Tutoring

What is Tutoring vs. Embedded Tutoring?

All tutors empower individuals to become independent learners and critical thinkers. Tutors provide a supportive environment for students to understand new or challenging material through the use of innovative learning and study strategies. In the Student Success Center (SSC), we refer to our drop-in tutoring services as “tutoring,” while embedded tutoring is connected with a faculty member and an assigned course.

The Student Success Center's Embedded Tutoring Program places a tutor in the classroom, working closely with the instructor for the duration of the course. The embedded tutor works in the class as:

  • a peer tutor
  • a mentor
  • a model for successful academic strategies and habits

Embedded tutors offer an experienced student’s voice to class discussions, lead small break-out sessions, or provide one-on-one mini-tutorials during class. Additionally, embedded tutors can offer in-class and out of class tutoring, help foster connection for the students with college academic support services, and address essential academic skills necessary to succeed in college level coursework. Our embedded tutors assist faculty with facilitating their lectures and providing a peer-to-peer insight to instructors.
