The College of Human Sciences and Humanities holds a number of specialized accreditations, including accreditations and approval from the Commission of Accreditation for the Association for Behavior Analysis International and the National Association of School Psychologists. The Council on Social Work Education has also accredited our bachelor's degree in social work. Our Kinesiology curriculum has been recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association for preparing students to successfully enter into the career field. The Human Factors Certificate and Applied Cognitive Psychology Program are accredited by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
UHCL professor secures a THECB grant to address nursing shortage in Texas
The nursing shortage in the U.S. is a critical issue, projected to leave a gap of over 78,000 full-time registered nurses by 2025. Addressing this challenge head-on, Karen Alexander, the director of nursing and an associate professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), has secured a $378,753 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Nursing Shortage Reduction Program. This funding is set to bolster UHCL’s efforts in recruiting and retaining bilingual students in UHCL’s Nursing program, increasing overall enrollment, and fostering innovative teaching methods to ensure a new generation of nursing educators and professionals.
Alexander attributes the nursing shortage, in part, to a lack of nurse educators and believes the grant will enhance degree marketing efforts, ultimately leading to more qualified nursing educators and healthcare professionals throughout the state.
Humans can learn a lot from animals by studying their behavior. Dr. Angela Kelling, an associate professor of psychology at UHCL, knows this from first-hand experience, as her main research interests lie in animal welfare. She has conducted research on pedagogy and campus climate, and on improving the lives of animals in captivity.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program is designed for students who want to further their craft and art career, pursue a position in graphic arts and design, explore curatorial positions, or teach art. Students can choose from three concentrations to meet their needs.
