Online Proctoring Resources

UHCL licenses several online proctoring solutions for instructors who deliver online quizzes, tests, and exams in Canvas. The information on this page includes resources for faculty and students on Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor and ProctorU Live (EDU Version).

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor - Student Information

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system. When LockDown Browser is required for an online exam, students are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, or access other applications. Respondus Monitor is an online proctoring solution that adds webcam and video analytics to LockDown Browser.

Getting Started with Respondus LockDown Browser

  1. Download the UHCL-Specific Version of LockDown Browser for you device. NOTE: There is also a short video on the download page that demonstrates how to install LockDown Browser.
  2. When it's time to take your online test, close all applications, tools, etc. on your device and then open LockDown Browser.
  3. Once in the LockDown Browser, navigate to Canvas (depending upon the course), enter the course, and open the test.

How Do I Get Started?

Step 1:

Create a ProctorU account and download the Guardian Secure Proctoring Browser. We also recommend registering for ProctorU’s “Live+ 101 Training for Instructors.” All this information and many other resources are available on ProctorU’s “Welcome, New Exam Admins & Instructors! Let’s Get Started!” webpage.

Step 2:

Schedule your exam in the ProctorU system. ProctorU recommends that you enter an exam into our system at least two weeks prior to the start of the exam window. This gives test-takers enough time to schedule their exam appointment and helps ensure we can plan capacity needs appropriately.

Start by logging into your account at go.proctoru.com and use our integrated, step-by-step training experience. Once you’re logged in, just click on the button that says Exam Entry Guide. Alternatively, you can read through our documentation here.

IMPORTANT! When setting up your exam in ProctorU, you will be asked to specify a department. BUS faculty should select the “BUS” option. All non-BUS instructors should select the “General Exam” option for the department setting.
