UHCL's institutional review board (IRB) is comprised of members from each of the four colleges and includes alternates in case the primary member is not present. Other members include external and non-research individuals. The UHCL IRB is organized and operated in accordance with the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR 46) and under Federalwide Assurance No. 00004068.
The protections apply to studies conducted internally by faculty or staff and to external studies conducted by grantees and contractors. UHCL adheres to the principles outlined in the Nuremberg Code, Belmont Report, and the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki.
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a federally mandated committee that reviews all protocols involving animals to ensure that they are justified by their benefits and minimize any animal pain or suffering that might occur. The use of animal research and teaching is a privilege that comes with both professional and moral obligations.
The IACUC is dedicated to supporting the education and research mission of UHCL while maintaining compliance with Federal and State animal care principles, guidelines, and regulations. This is achieved by the review and approval of all projects in teaching and research involving the use of live vertebrate animals by the IACUC prior to initiation.
In addition, the IACUC also reviews the institutional program for animal use and conducts inspections of all areas where animals are housed and used.
Based on UH System SAM Policy 01.G.03: Financial Conflict of Interest in Research, our COI disclosure system has been updated effective September 1, 2024.

Data Management is the process of controlling the information generated during a research project, including the storage, access and preservation of data throughout the research life cycle and beyond. Any research project will involve some level of data management; the outcome of the research depends in part on how well this data is managed.
Many federal funding agencies are now starting to require formalized data management plans. Regardless of funding, a written plan should be in place for all research projects, and shared with all key personnel involved with the project.
