Global Climate Change Week (GCCW) is an annual event currently hosted by the University of Tasmania, Australia, that encourages academic communities – including faculty, students, professional staff working with local municipalities – to mobilize for climate action.

GCCW Global Expert Panel: Climate Emergency = Health Emergency

Join the GCCW Global Expert Panel as they talk at lengths about: How climate change will impact family and community health, If the health sector is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead of us and if it is doing enough to curb its own carbon emissions, plus what more can be done.
Climate Change Awareness Booth by ECO Committee at I Heart UHCL Day

The ECO Committee will be hosting a booth at ‘I Heart UHCL Day’ in order to bring further awareness to climate change and learn what we can do to help mitigate its effects within our campus and community. Be sure to stop by!
Sponsored Lunch and Guided Nature Walk
Wednesday and Thursday, Oct 12 & 13, 11-12:30pm
UHCL Nature Trail
EIH and EJA will be hosting a nature walk to educate UHCL on the native species and landscape that inhabits our beautiful campus. This will be an exciting opportunity to get more in touch with our environment and the ways in which one can help enhance it. IHAPS will provide a lunch for all attendees following the conclusion of the walk.
Climate Change Film Night and Panel Discussion featuring Soylent Green
Friday, Oct 14, 4:30-6:30pm

Join us for the screening of Richard Fleischer’s “Soylent Green”. This 1973 science-fiction film tells the story of New York in the year 2022, when the population has swollen to an unbelievable 80 million, and people live in the streets and line up for their rations of water and Soylent Green. Following the movie, a panel discussion about the film and much more will be held.
Mini-Research Grants for Students
In celebration of Global Climate Change Week, The Institute of Human and Planetary Sustainability (IHAPS) invites all students at UHCL to identify an environmental issue that is affecting our campus and/or the surrounding communities and propose a sustainable solution to help mitigate the problem.
We are accepting proposals for projects that address one of the following prompts:
- Recycling/Waste Reduction
- Examples: improving recycling on campus, educating campus about importance, reducing single use plastics, organic waste programs, etc.
- Climate Change Fatigue and Mental Health
- Examples: ways to overcome fatigue, better understanding of student impacts, new avenues of engagement, education, and connection, etc.
Deadlines:
October 28th – Proposal Submission Deadline
November 4th – Awards Announced
December 16th – Final Projects Due
Award: $500
Research projects that are selected will receive a $500 stipend from IHAPS to further the impact that these projects will have for us all. We look forward to reviewing your projects and aiding in their success!
