Become a Texas Envirothon Partner!
The Texas Envirothon, offered in cooperation with the NCF-Envirothon, is part of North America's largest high school environmental education competition. The mission of the Texas Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated citizens who are willing and prepared to work toward achieving a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment. Texas Envirothon has been in existence since 2001, and is housed at the UHCL Environmental Institute of Houston.
Through several months of study under the guidance of teacher advisers, up to 20 teams of five high school-aged students prepare themselves for tests in soils/land use, aquatic ecology, wildlife, forestry, and a current environmental issue which changes yearly. To help prepare the teams for the competition, the advisers use a science-based curriculum in natural resources and ecology. The study sessions begin each fall and culminate at the statewide competition in the spring of each year. During the two-day state competition, teams work together to answer knowledge-based questions in outdoor field-testing stations. In the final event of the state contest, students prepare a presentation on a current environmentally related issue or topic. The winning team at the state level advances to represent Texas at the week-long NCF-Envirothon competition during late summer, which is held in a different state or Canadian province each year.
While housed at University of Houston-Clear Lake, the Texas Envirothon receives no direct state funding. In order to help Texas high school students enhance their understanding of environmental issues and learn what it means to work as a team, we are dependent upon the generosity of private and corporate support. To that end, we have created the Texas Envirothon Partners Program, a formal structure for recognition of annual giving by companies who support the Texas Envirothon. Members will be recognized in a variety of ways, commensurate with their support.
