Cost, Financial Aid and Residency Requirements

Cost of the Program

Completing a doctoral program represents a significant commitment of time and resources. Total costs for the program will vary considerably depending on a variety of factors, such as tuition and fee rates, pace at which a student completes the program, books and other materials, childcare, transportation, etc. Applicants should consider carefully the time and resources that will be required to complete the program.

Typically, the most significant expense associated with program completion is tuition and fees. Tuition and fees rates are approved by the University of Houston System Board of Regents in the spring of each year, to take effect the following fall. Since these rates change from year to year, it is not possible to specify what rates will be in the future. Current rates can be found at cost-of-attendance.

Financial Aid

Students in need of financial aid information should contact the Office of Student Financial Aid by phone at 281-283-2480 or by email . Be sure to let them know that you are applying to or enrolled in the doctoral program. The deadline for applying for priority financial aid from the University is April 1.

Residency Requirements

Every doctoral program must provide opportunities for regular interaction between students and faculty as well as among students. To achieve this goal, the THECB requires that doctoral students fulfill a Residency Requirement. Doctoral students are considered as being "in residence" if they are taking 9 or more hours of doctoral courses from their program. To satisfy the Residency Requirement, doctoral students must be in residence for

  • two consecutive long terms,
  • two full summer terms and one of the intervening long terms, or
  • three full summer terms.
