EXCITE Scholarship
About the Scholarship
You've got big plans for your future. So do we.
The PPOHA Exploring Careers in Teaching (EXCITE) Scholarship offers tuition funds for low-income students in the Masters in Counseling with School Counselor Certification Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) programs. Funding for the EXCITE Program was provided by the Department of Education: PPOHA grant division.
Scholarship awards vary from $1,000 to $5,000 per semester, up to a maximum for six semesters.
Criteria for Scholarships
- Must be admitted to UHCL's MS Counseling with School Counselor Certification, MAT program or the EDCI program.
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Have a GPA greater than or equal to 2.75
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- To continue receiving the scholarship, must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be enrolled in 6 credit hours each fall, summer, and spring semester, and complete the FAFSA each academic year. Eligibility is reviewed each semester.
Steps to Apply
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Please log into E-Services and click on "Admissions"
- Next, click on "Apply for UHCL Scholarships". Do not fill in any information at this point
- Click "Search"
- EXCITE or (PPOHA) Scholarship should pop up
- Do NOT click on "Apply"
- Click on "Details" to view the criteria
- Go back and click "Apply". The aid year you are applying for is "2021"
- Answer the questions and download your document
- Submit
- Once you click on "Apply" and submit the scholarship application you cannot go back to that specific scholarship so you must have documentation prepared before you click "Apply"
- A confirmation will appear when the application is submitted
Miscellaneous Information
- Scholarship recipients may accept other scholarships and grants in conjunction with this scholarship.
- Recipients of the EXCITE Scholarship will be determined by the PPOHA EXCITE Scholar Selection Committee.
- Funds can be used to cover tuition, books, fees and/or supplies for the coming academic semester. You are responsible for any expenses beyond what is covered by the scholarship.
- Financial Aid will notify students when funds are made available.
- Eligibility is reviewed each semester. Notification about eligibility is communicated as final grades are posted.
- The EXCITE Scholarship does not need to be repaid.
- If you believe you are eligible for the EXCITE Scholarship but it does not appear in your E-Services, please contact EXCITE@uhcl.edu.
