Recognizing Leadership, Excellence, and Service

The Hawk Excellence Awards is an annual tradition at the University of Houston-Clear Lake that honors the outstanding achievements of student leaders, student organizations, and faculty and staff who contribute to student success. This event recognizes individuals and groups who exemplify leadership, service, and innovation in shaping the UHCL experience.

Reception: 4:30 p.m.
Awards Ceremony: 5:30 p.m. (Bayou Theater)
Attire: Elegant Business Attire Recommended

This event is open to all members of the UHCL community. We especially encourage student leaders, student organization members, faculty and staff advisors, and campus partners who support student engagement to attend.

Award Categories

Highest Honor

Talon Achievement Award (Self-Nomination)

The most prestigious recognition awarded to a student leader or organization that has demonstrated long-term impact and sustained success in student engagement. This award honors individuals or organizations that have consistently contributed to the UHCL student experience through visionary leadership, dedication, and meaningful contributions that have shaped campus life over time.

Requirement: One letter of recommendation from a UHCL faculty/staff member.

Individual Student Awards

Emerging Leader Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a first-year or new transfer/graduate student who has shown exceptional leadership potential and early contributions to student engagement. This individual has demonstrated initiative, commitment, and promise in their organization or leadership role at UHCL.

Student Organization Executive Leader of the Year (Nomination-Based)

Honors an executive board member of a registered student organization who has shown outstanding leadership, innovation, and dedication to advancing their organization’s mission. This leader has positively influenced their peers and contributed to the success and sustainability of their organization.

Distinguished Leadership Award (Self-Nomination)

Recognizes a student leader who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and commitment to student engagement at UHCL. This award honors an individual whose leadership has fostered meaningful change, inspired others, and contributed significantly to campus life.

Requirement: One letter of recommendation from a UHCL faculty/staff member.

Innovation in Leadership Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a student who has developed or implemented a new initiative, policy, or event that has enhanced the UHCL community. This award highlights creative and forward-thinking leadership that has led to a meaningful impact.

Campus Spirit Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a student who has actively promoted school pride, engagement, and community building at UHCL. This individual is a visible presence at campus events and contributes to a strong sense of university spirit.

Student Organization Awards

Student Organization of the Year (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a student organization that has demonstrated outstanding performance in programming, membership engagement, and student impact over the past year. This award honors an organization that has effectively fulfilled its mission, strengthened student involvement, and contributed to a vibrant campus environment.

New Student Organization of the Year (Nomination-Based)

Awarded to an organization established within the past two years that has demonstrated strong growth, leadership, and impact on campus. This organization has effectively built its membership, hosted successful initiatives, and contributed to campus life.

Collaboration Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes an organization that has demonstrated exemplary collaboration with other student organizations, departments, or external partners to enhance student engagement. This award highlights teamwork, partnership, and shared success.

Impact Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes an organization that has demonstrated a commitment to purpose-driven efforts on campus and/or in the community. This award honors initiatives that create meaningful experiences or significant contributions.

Community Engagement Award (Nomination-Based)

Honors an organization that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to service and civic engagement through volunteerism, advocacy, and community initiatives. This award recognizes an organization’s impact beyond campus.

Excellence in Member Development Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a student organization that has prioritized the personal, professional, and leadership development of its members. This organization invests in mentorship, training, and opportunities that empower students to grow and succeed.

Outstanding Student Organization Event (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes an exceptional program or event hosted by a student organization that significantly contributed to student engagement and campus vibrancy. This award celebrates creativity, planning, and impact.

Advisor & Campus Partner Awards

Advisor of the Year (Nomination-Based)

Honors a faculty or staff advisor who has demonstrated outstanding mentorship, guidance, and advocacy for a student organization. This individual has gone above and beyond to support student leaders and organizational success.

Campus Collaborator Award (Nomination-Based)

Recognizes a campus department, office, or staff member that has actively supported student organizations and leadership development. This award honors partnerships that contribute to student success.

Scholarships (Self-Nomination Only)

Sue Fellman Servant Leadership Scholarship (SLSP Students Only)

Presented to a student in the Servant Leader Scholars Program (SLSP) who has exemplified dedication to service, mentorship, and leadership at UHCL.

Requirement: One letter of recommendation from a UHCL faculty/staff member.

Lehman Family Leadership Scholarship (HLI Students Only)

Honors students in the Hawk Leadership Institute (HLI) who embody the mission and values of the program and demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership.

Requirement: One letter of recommendation from a UHCL faculty/staff member.
