Veteran Resources

The Office of Military and Veteran Services continues to monitor COVID-19, particularly in regards to resources for veterans.

Our office has compiled a list of resources which you will find below to better assist students who may need assistance in the following areas: 

Transition Support

Texas Veterans Commission
TVC provides support for disability claims, education benefits, employment, and much more. Their mission is to advocate for and provide superior service to veterans that will significantly improve the quality of life for all Texas veterans, their families, and survivors. 

Combined Arms Houston
Combined Arms provides extensive support to military members and their families as they transition to civilian life, bringing together a multitude of veteran-focused nonprofits to provide comprehensive services.  

Wounded Warrior Project ®
The WWP mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to your military service on or after September 11, 2001. You may also be eligible for the program if you are the family member or caregiver of a Wounded Warrior. 

Veterans Land Board
The VLB offers land, home and home improvement loans; nine long-term care homes; four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries; the Voices of Veterans Oral History Program and the VLB Call Center. 

Career and Recovery Resources Veteran Assistance
CRR serves transitioning military members, reservists, National Guard members, veterans of all eras and ranks, military and veteran spouses, and dependents under 25 living with a veteran or military sponsor. Services include emergency temporary financial assistance, placement & screening services, skills analysis & soft skills programs and retention services: assistance and follow-up to ensure a successful placement. 

Grace After Fire
With peer-to-peer support, financial needs assistance, and social events, Grace After Fire’s mission is to provide the means for women veterans to gain self-knowledge and self-renewal. 

Lone Star Legal Aid
The Military and Veterans Unit of Lone Star Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to low-income military veterans, dependents, and surviving spouses across 72 counties.  

Employment and Career Support

Texas Workforce Commission (Just for Veterans)
Maximize your employment opportunities as you transition into civilian life. Search for jobs, receive priority service at Texas Workforce Solutions offices and get information on transition assistance and benefits. 

Dress for Success
The mission of Dress for Success Houston is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. 

Career Gear Houston
Career Gear Greater Houston (CGGH) empowers men, male youth, & veterans who are striving to overcome economic disadvantage. Offering professional attire & career coaching necessary to gain employment. 

Goodwill Houston
Goodwill Houston helps veterans as they re-integrate into the civilian labor market after military service or overcome other barriers to employment, serving all military veterans, regardless of discharge status or time in service. 

Premium LinkedIn Subscription
LinkedIn offers U.S. service members and veterans a free 1-year Premium Career subscription, including one year of access to LinkedIn Learning. 

Health Services

Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center
The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center serves as the primary health care provider for more than 113,000 Veterans in southeast Texas.  

Women Veterans Health Care
Women Veterans Health Care program mission addresses the health care needs of women veterans and works to ensure that timely, equitable, high-quality, comprehensive health care services are provided in a sensitive and safe environment at VA health facilities nationwide. 

VA Mental Health Guide
Mental health resources for transitioning and veteran service members, friends and family of service members, and more.  

Suicide Prevention Lifeline
1-800- 273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) Veterans press “1” or text 838255. Chat function is also available through the website. 
Suicide prevention resources for veterans as well as their family and friends.  

DoD Safe Helpline
Sexual assault support for the DoD community. Safe Helpline has created six ways for members of the Department of Defense community to access anonymous, confidential, and secure support and information, 24/7— getting you access to the help you need, anytime, anywhere. 

VA Caregiver Support
VA has two programs for caregivers: The Program of General Caregiver Support Services (eligible Veterans all eras) and the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (eligible post-9/11 Veterans).

Records and Benefit Management

National Archives (Veterans’ Service Records)
Most veterans and their next of kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) and military service records through submitting a request to the National Archive. 

VA/DoD eBenefits
Serves veterans, service members, wounded warriors, their family members, and their authorized caregivers. Offers self-service access to personal information, benefits applications, and employment resources.
