Mathematics Program
The Mathematics Program provides broad-based degrees in mathematical science and supports the mathematical needs of other subject areas.
While earning a degree in mathematics, you will become a proficient problem-solver, a highly desirable trait for any career! Some of the most common careers to matriculate into are actuarial science and education; however, there are a myriad of options.
Actuarial Science
One of the most lucrative careers might be to become an actuary.
Actuaries use mathematics to determine financial ramifications of risk, often work for insurance companies, typically have high salaries, often enjoy a great work/life balance, and have historically had stable job security. In 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports the median Actuary's salary to be over $110,000; furthermore, the number of positions in the field is expected to grow 18% faster than the average. Though it can be tough to become an actuary, some of our alumni have successfully matriculated into the field of actuarial science, and our new undergraduate Actuarial Science subplan can help students prepare for actuarial exams.
Education
Almost every state needs more mathematics teachers. To become a certified public-school mathematics teacher in Texas, one thing you will need to do is pass the TExES (mathematics content) exam. Fortunately, our program worked with the College of Education to develop two bachelor’s degree plans which lead to a traditional teaching certificate. The mathematics coursework required for these degrees will help prepare students to pass the TExES and become highly qualified teachers!
Other Careers
Aside from these specific careers, students who earn mathematics degrees will be well-trained to excel in almost any Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM) field. Undergraduate students have flexibility to take many different upper-level general electives to tailor around their own specialization or personal preference. In addition, serious students have the opportunity to apply for the Mathematics Scholar's Plan, which provides a pathway for students to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in 5 years.
In addition to the standard MS in Mathematics, graduate students could choose to specialize with our subplans, including: Computational and Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics Education. Regardless of the choices you make, you will work with faculty that are distinguished in teaching, research, and service to our campus community.

- 3.0 GPA
- GRE Requirements:
- GRE is waived but may be submitted if GPA is less than 3.0. Scores will then need to be Total Score of 290 (150 Quantitative)
- Foundation Courses: Lineal Algebra, Differential Equations, Advanced Calculus
- Additional Requirements – Undergraduate degree in Math; Students with other degrees may apply if undergraduate course work includes a substantial number of advanced credit hours in math courses.
