Mission Statement

The mission of the Computer Information System Bachelor of Science program is to cultivate undergraduate students to become future information systems practitioners. We achieve this by preparing them with solid understanding of computing and information management principles and strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in collaboration with local businesses and communities.

The mission of the Computer Information Systems Master of Science program is to prepare students from diverse background for key information systems positions in various sectors by providing them knowledge through rigorous coursework and experience through practical projects and exciting research activities, enabling them to excel in solving real business problems using information technology-based solutions.

Program Educational Objectives

The program educational objectives of the CIS program strike a balance between theory and practice of computer science and computer information systems. This balance satisfies both regional and national needs. Graduates of the CIS program are equipped with sound technical knowledge and skills, and an understanding of Information Systems environments. They are provided a broad education to attain productive employment, prepare them for success in further studies, and continue lifelong learning. Specifically, we want students engaged in:

  1. Professional Practice:
    Graduates will be highly proficient in computer information systems and be qualified for various positions, including (but not limited to) programmer, systems analyst, information technology consultant, information technology support specialist, and information systems manager.
  2. Professional Growth:
    Graduates will demonstrate continuous career improvement, evidenced by increasing responsibility and leadership, participation in further studies, or transition into other technical or professional careers. Associated skills include initiative, innovation, creativity, effective communication, and teamwork.
  3. Professional Conduct:
    Graduates will possess an awareness of the social and ethical implications of their work and their behavior.

Student Outcomes

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program's discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program's discipline.
  6. Support the delivery, use, and management of information systems within an information systems environment.
