Passing of recent graduate Sherman Palmer Fricks Jr.

office of the president

June 5, 2019

Dear UHCL Students, Faculty and Staff:

With a heavy heart, I note the untimely passing of Sherman Palmer Fricks Jr., who had just received a Bachelor of Social Work from the College of Human Sciences and Humanities on May 19. Mr. Fricks died Sunday, June 2, in Deer Park.

Mr. Fricks' professors and peers ask the UH-Clear Lake community to remember his earnest commitment to helping others. He was a passionate student in the BSW program who engaged in critical thought, supported fellow students, and volunteered weekly at a local center for addiction recovery.

He had just completed his Senior Year Internship and was open-minded and eager to learn throughout the process. He connected clients to community resources to ensure their access to the health services they needed.

Mr. Fricks was looking forward to a career in social work, and was dedicated to helping in the areas of harm reduction, addiction and mental health. The profession lost a promising new member, and we have lost a colleague and friend.

Funeral services are pending. Our Office of Counseling Services can provide any emotional support you may need. If you need to talk, please call 281-283-2580.

Sincerely,

Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
President
