Online campus operations extended through April 30 for faculty and staff

Office of the President

April 2, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff:

These extraordinary circumstances have presented new challenges for us all, and I am proud of the way you have worked attentively to help our students succeed. Please take care of yourselves and your families, even as you care for the welfare and future of our UH-Clear Lake students.

I have the following updates to share with you:

Online Operations Extended Through April 30
On Tuesday, March 31, Harris County officials extended the "Stay Home, Work Safe" order through April 30. The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented and requires that we be ready to respond as the situation changes. I ask for your patience and understanding as we work together to manage its potential consequences on our efforts to continue educational delivery and university operations.

Last weekend, I shared a video on social media with updates from myself, Dr. Berberich, and Dr. Hart. Our leadership team will reevaluate the delivery of instruction and services later this month and keep you informed via email, website, and social media.

Interim Grading Policy
UH-Clear Lake has implemented an interim Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grade Policy to help alleviate some of the stress this pandemic is putting on our students. This policy allows students to choose between a traditional letter grading scheme and a satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) grading scheme.

Summer Classes Moving Online
All summer classes scheduled to start before July 1 (May Mini session, 5-week first and regular summer classes) will be conducted online or via alternative format. We will continue to monitor the impact of the pandemic and will determine by the end of April whether summer classes after July 1 can return to their regular format.

The health and wellbeing of our UH-Clear Lake community remains my highest priority. No matter your circumstances, please reach out if you need assistance. Our lives have been disrupted, and the situation continues to evolve. Yet, seeing the grit and care shown by our faculty and staff makes me confident we will get through this, together.

Sincerely,

Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
UHCL President
