New semester, new opportunities
August 28, 2019
Dear Faculty and Staff:
Welcome to the fall semester. And Happy New (fiscal) Year! We have many reasons to
celebrate. Our campuses are teeming with new and returning students, we opened Hunter
Hall, our first on-campus residence hall – and we begin our 45th year of service to
the families, industries and communities of the Gulf Coast region.
UH-Clear Lake was created to serve the educational and research needs of NASA, which
brought new families into the area, spawned new businesses and created economic engines
that fueled our communities, our state and nation.
From Day One, UHCL has been the solution: training engineers, scientists, astronauts,
educators, counselors, accountants, managers, civic leaders and others who helped
build this thriving, diverse corner of America.
Forty-five years later, our students face even bigger opportunities: They will be
the generation responsible for creating environmental, economic and social sustainability
and resiliency, using the knowledge, creativity, critical-thinking skills and ethics
they will develop here by our instruction and care.
While we each play our respective parts, I ask you to keep in mind that we all share
the same mission, which hasn’t changed:
We are still the solution.
Sincerely,
Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
President
