When Hailey Thomas first opened the email notifying her that she had received the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s New Hawk Scholarship, she froze in disbelief. This moment marked the beginning of a life-changing journey. The scholarship was more than financial relief. It was an opportunity to pursue her passion for computer science without the burden of debt, something she and her family had worked tirelessly to achieve.

or many adults, the dream of earning a college degree can feel out of reach, with financial hurdles standing in the way. That’s why the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is committed to making higher education accessible through scholarships and grants. For some students, even one scholarship can make all the difference - but for Alexa Guerrero-Magallon, receiving three scholarships not only made her education possible but allowed her to graduate from UHCL debt-free.

UHCL professor secures a THECB grant to address nursing shortage in Texas

The nursing shortage in the U.S. is a critical issue, projected to leave a gap of over 78,000 full-time registered nurses by 2025. Addressing this challenge head-on, Karen Alexander, the director of nursing and an associate professor at UHCL, has secured a $378,753 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Nursing Shortage Reduction Program. This funding is set to bolster UHCL’s efforts in recruiting and retaining bilingual students in UHCL’s Nursing program, increasing overall enrollment, and fostering innovative teaching methods to ensure a new generation of nursing educators and professionals.
