Biography
Dawit O. Woldu is an associate professor of anthropology and cross-cultural studies
at University of Houston-Clear Lake. He teaches courses on social medicine and topics
on African studies. He received his doctorate from the University of Florida in medical
anthropology in 2012.
Dr. Woldu's research interest is on the cultural, biological and ecological dimension
of malaria and HIV/AIDS in Kenya. His research also involves the role of substance
abuse and other culturally mediated risk behaviors on the epidemics of HIV/AIDS in
urban communities in eastern Africa. He has also done extensive research on Eritrean
and Ethiopian refugees and immigrants in the United States.
Before moving to University of Houston-Clear Lake, Dr. Woldu did his postdoctoral
work at Ohio University, African Studies Program, working on HIV/AIDS and substance
abuse project and teaching a course on Health Research in Africa. He also worked as
teaching coordinator for a global health course with the Global Health Institute at
Ohio University. Dr. Woldu is fluent in Tigrinya and Amharic. He can also speak Tigre
at an intermediate level and Arabic at a very basic level.
