University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education offers a convenient, flexible online option for the Early Childhood Education Master of Science. We know that no matter how busy you are in your professional or family life, you still need options to help you advance your education. This program merges quality education delivered by caring, dedicated professionals, with the convenience of taking classes at home at your own pace.

Through a unique blend of online coursework and research, you'll learn how to more actively engage children up to 8 years of age so you can help develop their communication, motor and cognitive skills. This program, recognized by the National Association for the Education for Young Children, allows career changers and veteran educators to expand their job opportunities and help children in their most critical learning years.

Gain Real-World Knowledge

All faculty members involved in the program have doctorates focused on early childhood education, and are committed to your success as you complete your coursework and after you graduate. Course topics include:

  • Child development and learning
  • Creative arts
  • Literacy
  • Math and science
  • Guidance and classroom management

After completing the required coursework, you can select the 160-clock-hour practicum option, allowing you to apply what you learned in a practical environment. Choose from a variety of settings, including elementary schools, community college class co-teaching, and agencies that serve young children with disabilities. UHCL also offers museum and informal education options, such as Space Center Houston Education Department and Armand Bayou Nature Centers. You can also choose a thesis option, in lieu of the practicum.

As a graduate of UHCL's online Early Childhood Education M.S., you'll be qualified for various careers at schools, nature centers, and education departments. Options include:

  • Director or professional development coordinator of an early childhood program
  • Early childhood interventionist (ECI)
  • Manager for a center-based program for young children
  • Consultant, mentor or coach for a state and local agency
  • Community college early childhood course instructor
