Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Plan Core Subjects EC-6 Special Education EC-12

Expert Special Education Teachers are Vital to Schools

If you started your first professional career in another field and you’re interested in a career change, your focus on teaching young students can be particularly rewarding. University of Houston-Clear Lake's Post-Baccalaureate Certification Plan with Core Subjects in Early Childhood-6 with EC-12 Special Education qualifies you to play a key role in the success of a child in core subjects through sixth grade and through 12th grade for those with a learning or developmental disability. As more developing learners are identified with learning disabilities, schools are acknowledging a greater need for qualified Special Education teachers.

Give Children with Special Needs the Tools for Success

Your passion to guide and teach children with special needs will put you in a classroom with younger children who are struggling with various learning disabilities. Your coursework will help you instruct these children, often in a one-on-one setting, to support their comprehension, spelling and writing skills as well as help them read for enjoyment. You’ll acquire the tools to demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills to students and parents, and develop a strong content knowledge across the education spectrum. Ultimately, you’ll help students gain their independence to learn and navigate their surroundings so that they can continue to progress both academically and in the other aspects of their lives.

Although it is not necessary for students holding at least a bachelor's degree and seeking initial teacher certification to pursue a second bachelor's degree, those who wish to do so must meet the university's lower-level requirements in addition to the requirements for both teacher certification and the second degree, unless such requirements were met through the completion of the first bachelor's degree. These lower-level requirements are described in the Core section of the catalog.
