Train Your Mind to Think Logically, Analytically and Creatively

With roots in both the ancient east and west, philosophy has the distinction of being the oldest academic discipline. At the same time, philosophers in the 21st century have a vital role in making sense of our ever-changing world. Philosophers today are engaged in cutting edge work about whether robots can think, the ethics of gene therapy, and the complicated ways in which identity is constructed in a multicultural society. Philosophy asks the big questions beginning with how we got here, and, even more importantly, where we are going. Whether investigating the realm of metaphysics or more practical concerns regarding business ethics, philosophy passionately seeks out the best arguments in pursuit of truth.

Philosophy and Career Preparation

By studying philosophy, you will develop your analytical thinking, problem solving, and knowledge of theoretical and practical ethics. Philosophy prepares you for careers in education, law, nonprofit or public administration, and business management. Beyond career preparation, studying philosophy promises to make us more reflective about our own lives as well as the world around us.

Students can concentrate in philosophy as part of either the bachelor’s or master’s degree in humanities. Additionally, undergraduates across the university can elect a philosophy minor.

For more information about the philosophy minor, please contact Professor Daniel Silvermintz at silvermintz@uhcl.edu.
