Early Childhood: PreKindergarten - Grade 3 and Special Education EC-12, B.S.
Help Each Student in Your Classroom Succeed
Your Bachelor of Science in Education with Early Childhood: PreKindergarten - Grade
3 Certification and Special Education EC-12 from the University of Houston-Clear Lake
will prepare you to teach in prekindergarten through grade 3, plus work with young
children eligible for Early Childhood Special Education programs helping children
with developmental disabilities prepare for kindergarten.
Early intervention with high-quality services can change a child’s developmental trajectory
and result in later success in school, work, and the community. When children who
have developmental disabilities - or are at risk for them - receive early intervention,
they show positive changes in health, language and communication, cognitive development,
and social and emotional development. You will have the skills to help all students,
regardless of their academic challenges, to achieve a higher level of success. This
program focuses on child development; research-based instructional and assessment
practices in early childhood education; and the skills to assess, monitor and report
the progress of children with and without disabilities. It prepares students to collaborate
effectively with family members of young children to support the growth and development
of those children.
Become One of Your School’s Most Valuable Resources
Special education teachers are a valued resource in the school environment. You'll
also work with general education teachers, counselors, social workers, school superintendents,
administrators and parents to create a collaborative approach to meeting your students'
needs. You’ll be equipped to work in a classroom, a resource center or another setting
in your school to teach students, depending on their needs. As student populations
continue to increase and become more diverse, employment of special education teachers
is expected to increase faster than average. Your Bachelor of science from University
of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education equips you with the training you’ll need
to be a coveted member of any school's faculty.
